Document Accessibility Consulting

Above and beyond meeting the Section 508 standards and goals, Federal agencies and industries need to present usable and easy-to-comprehend documents and PDF’s that are compatible with assistive technology and software. To make these screen-reader-friendly documents requires some significant technical adjustments to the document authoring process prior to uploading on-line.
This step is a critical piece to making an otherwise compliant document fully comprehended by persons with disabilities using assistive technology. Access Ingenuity is here to help.

Section 508 - It's Important to Comply

Sec.508 - What is it?

In order for persons with disabilities who use assistive technology to obtain and use information off a computer quickly and easily, Section 508 (an Amendment of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1998. (The significance of this amendment is that now persons who are visually disabled should be able to use their assistive technology (such as screen readers) to read any document on the computer particularly as it relates to a Federal government website.)

In addition to that amendment, Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in Information Technology, to make available new opportunities for persons with disabilities and to encourage development of technologies that help achieve these goals.

Sec.508 - Who is it For

Section 508 is a requirement to all federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508, agencies must give disabled employees and member of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to other.

Section 508 doesn’t, however, require private websites to comply unless they are receiving federal funds or are under contract with a federal agency.

Sec.508 - Compliance Standards to be Met

The 508 amendment has pre-determined technical standards to be met for compliance. Access Ingenuity can help you meet Website and Document Accessibility standards set forth in the amendment. More importantly, we also ensure that your websites and documents are usable (that is, easily opened, read, heard and comprehended) via a screen-reader.

The most expedient way for government agencies to meet the compliance standards as well as the needs of persons who are visually impaired and other persons with disabilities is to provide accessible electronic documents. The most common electronic document format is the PDF and the other is HTML.

PDF’s are an ideal tool because it allows any business to ensure security and authenticity to an original document whether it be online forms, reports or catalogs.
